EQ
- Sound Design - "Equalization & Microphone Types"
What is the difference between dynamic and condenser microphones? In terms of sensitivity, condenser mics are more sensitive compared to dynamic mics. Dynamic mics also require no power, while condenser mics require a battery or phantom.
What is directionality? It is the "pickup pattern" of a microphone in which your microphone can pick up sound from a particular direction. There are three basic types such as omnidirectional, cardioid, and super-cardioid. Omnidirectional can pick up sounds equally from all directions, while cardioid is more sensitive to sounds from the front.
Why would you use a lavalier? A shotgun? A dynamic? It all depends on the scene's situation. Lavaliers and shotguns are better used when the subject needs their hands free in the shot for things such as hand movements and presentations. Shotgun microphones are also ideal for scenes in which the subject is farther away from you due to its range. However, lavaliers and dynamic mics are also far more sensitive compared to dynamic mics, so dynamic mics may be ideal for situations in which there is a lot of background noise that the microphone can pick up.
What is EQ? It is the changing of balance between different frequency components in an audio signal.
How does an instrument or voice's timbre affect how we EQ? Different instruments and voices have the same fundamental frequency, but different timbre. This means that there is a possibility of overlapping between the two sounds, which can be nullified through the use of EQ.
How does masking affect recordings with multiple sounds? Masking makes it harder to identify individual sounds, creating an overlapping effect.
How can you use filters to improve audio quality? Filters can be used to change the spectrum of the sound. including things such as low-pass, high-pass, and bell filters. These affect the shape of the bands, allowing you to manipulate sounds to achieve better quality.
Explain Additive and Subtractive EQ? Additive EQ boosts frequencies, whereas subtractive EQ cuts off offending frequencies.
